The Eye that You See …
…is not an eye because you see it, but because it sees you." As in Machado’s
aphorism, the eye is a door to reflection. An exchange of glances involves
learning, because the eye has the ability to pose questions.
The “Eyes” paintings make us feel uncomfortable because they force us to rest
our gaze on eyes that observe us unblinkingly, with a somewhat hypnotic
vision that makes us question many things.
The enigma of the “Eyes” goes far beyond visual anecdote. Art suddenly
returns our gaze and brings us into the game. It may remind us of our role as
viewers as we interpret the pictures, it may remind us of our social and
environmental responsibilities … who knows? |
