Giravel (Imaginary Flowers)
If Van Gogh had continued to paint sunflowers, he might have
eventually come up with the new botanical species called giravel,
Camuñas’ fusion of girasol (sunflower) and clavel (carnation). With his
imaginary flowers, the artist invents a way of applying surrealism to
the still life.
Far from classic still lifes, Camuñas’ flower pots depict all the vitality,
freshness and texture of flowers, where all that is missing is the scent.
Bright colours and the characteristic daubs of the artist give the flowers
a visually attractive naïveté. |
